a tiago fernandes post

January 31, 2010

Brazil hasn’t had a champ since Guga (sounds like forever, and it sort of is in tennis years).Tiago Fernandes wins the AO Boy’s singles, puts Brazil on the list of countries with junior Grand Slam winners at last. Cliff notes version of my thoughts:

(1) Yaaaaay Brazilian tennis! GO TIAGO, GOGOGO! (2) Lol local media hype.

Is he the next Guga? The ITF Junior Grand Slam Winners site tells you everything you need to know.

THE STAHS arrive early, before they hit 20 (OR WITH AN OUT OF THE BLUE DREAM RUN IN A SLAM LIKE GUGA’S IN 1997). A win in a senior match when you’re around 15-16, or displays like Bernard Tomic’s (he of the vereh charming father) against Cilic this year in the 2R of the AO main draw are good stuff. So Tiago has around 3 or 4 years to do something outside junior and challenger level.

Roger Federer and Andy Roddick won 2 Junior GS each. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro have ZERO junior GS titles between them. Gael Monfils has 3.

You can see more pics of Tiago here & here. Grigor Dimitrov remains the hottest out of all tennis bbs, but Tiago is presh.
