Death by cute #1, and death by cute #2. (Hola, Iker. :>)

He kills me, he does. His “no” when he was asked about feeling like he owns the tournament was très cute, but I don’t believe it. How could he not?

Every tournament is one of Rafa’s favorite, he says that about almost all of them. But out of the TMS events, I think Monte truly is Rafa’s favorite. Just like Wimbledon is his favorite Slam. Maybe because it gave him his very first Masters shield, but maybe also because Rafa gets a kick from the whole ‘socializing with royalty’ thing.

For all of his plebeian appeal and “simple boy from an island” image, Rafa seems to really dig pompous stuff and care about the prestige factor (compare him talking about Queen’s with, say, Barcelona, Rotterdam or Dubai). Not as a life style for himself, no, but as an indication of… importance? Status? He’s deferential.

You know how Mandy always says USO is his favorite Slam – not only because the surface suits him, but because he likes New York and he finds it carefree and fun? Rafa is in a more conservative, old-fashioned direction.

Totally agree about the royalty thing.. I think Rafa gets quite the little kick from it. I think the whole ‘awesome’ (not as in AWESOME!1! but in it’s original meaning) history and tradition factors also push up the tournament in the Rafa ‘favourite’ stakes.
    I wish I owned a backyard that could be a tournament.. maybe it’d be Rafa’s favourite too ❤ ❤ ❤
Also how King Juan Carlos being at his matches, or Prince Felipe.. it really seems to mean a lot to him.

Personally, I think he doesn’t give a shit. But he HAS to be like that, like he cares. I’m sure he would rather be playing with his PS than with this prince person.

And yes, it’s funny like he always says it’s his favorite tournament heheee

He can play with his PS almost every day, but the whole ‘meeting up with royalty’ thing is a once every couple of months deal – and I think he was raised in a way that makes him see this as high privilege (he does come from a Constitutional Monarchy, after all).

I do agree that this is not something that I see Rafa enjoying *daily*, or even often.
